Obey...then know

John 7:17
"If any man is willing to do His will, he shall know of the teaching,
whether it is of God, or whether I speak from Myself.”

Jesus indicates that obedience precedes knowing the veracity of His teaching.  The first step to true understanding is obedience to God.  If we will not first bow the knee before the King, we cannot really know the truth.  This obedience rests upon the faith that He is, in fact, the King.  Our sinful inclination is to know before we obey.  The simple obedience from faith exhibited by a child is lost in our sophistication of arguments, and so is our knowledge of truth.
Frederick Robertson put it this way in his sermon on this passage, “”Surely then, by removing self-will, and so only, can the hindrance to right opinions be removed.”  “It is more true to say that our opinions depend upon our lives and habits, than to say that our lives depend upon our opinions, which is only now and then true.  The fact is, men think in a certain mode on these matters because their life is a certain character, and their opinions are only invented afterward as a defense for their life.”

How true it is.  I am convinced that we consider an interpretation of Genesis 1 and 2 that allows for an old earth not because the passage allows such an interpretation, surely it doesn’t, but because we suspect scientific assertion may be true.  Some have adopted a perspective on women as elders or deacons which leads them to place an unnatural interpretation on the clear scriptural teaching.  Others want warrant for their various vices, so they fabricate an argument to show biblical allowance of their sin.  Each of these errors is removed by following Jesus words, "If any man is willing to do His will, he shall know…”  Obedience must come first.  May God give us the grace to obey and believe what the Bible teaches instead of trying to use it to justify the lifestyle we have chosen.

Mornings

The morning is peaceful.
Blues and grays streak across the sky.
A hint of pink and of orange lies on the horizon as a foundation for the heavens to rise above my head.
The snow covers the variegated earth accentuating the subtle sloping hills.
God is here.

His presence is not noisy.
And yet it is more than a whisper.
He is more than His shadow seen in the clouds.
He is here, directing my heart, speaking in His word, hearing my prayers,
Even the prayers I am too afraid to share.
In the midst of all the busyness, the bustle of the coming day,
I give myself to Thee,

The one who died for me.

Christmas 2013

December 2013

Dear loved ones,
Never in our lives did we think we would live in Pennsylvania (James 4:13-14).  We have lived in some of the most beautiful states in America—Colorado, Arizona, and Florida.  In 2013 we learned that Pennsylvania lacks the publicity but not the beauty.  The rolling green hills, amazing sunrises, beautiful forests, and changing seasons have been a delight to us.  In addition, we have a church home filled with people who want to have an impact on their community.  We are truly thankful for God’s plan.

Another surprise is that our children are with us in Pennsylvania.  When we agreed to go to Scotland in 2008, Patrick moved to Tennessee and we assumed that we would be separated from our sons for the next two decades.  Instead, this summer Patrick and Britney moved to York and in October Michael came home too.  We now share a home with these three people whom we adore.  We worship together weekly and thank God for His plan.

Oh, and did we mention our home.  We live on Narnia.  Yes, we are the Woods of Narnia.  When we visited Providence in September 2012, we noticed a development across the street from the church called, Aslan Heights.  The entry road is Narnia.  We joked about how fun it would be to live on Narnia…and now we do.  And the house is a quarter mile from the church.  God’s plan is wonderful.
I guess 2013 has been about learning to trust God’s plan.  We do not understand but it is good.  2000 years ago, He asked Jesus to be born a baby, live as a man, love people unconditionally, and be killed by these same people.  It doesn’t sound like such a great plan…but God brought Jesus back to life, forgave the sins of millions of people and all so that they might be reconciled to God.  That is a great plan!

Merry Christmas from the Wood family.

Dark Flows The River

When Robin's mom passed away, a single sentence ran through her mind.  After we lost a baby to a miscarriage, the sentence returned to her mind, "Dark flows the river."  This grief led us to write the following poem.  Today I learned that a new friend of mine just lost a loved one and my mind returned to "Dark flows the river."

DARK FLOWS THE RIVER
By Robin and Vince Wood

Dark flows the river as it covers my soul.
The weight on my heart joins with my every breath
Telling me that in this land I cannot rest,
For the remnants of sin always take their toll.

Your providence brings pain to destroy my pride.
Take away the idols in my heart of stone.
Capture every wicked thought I have ever known,
And bring me joy in pain with nowhere to hide.

Chorus:
I am crushed by the power of Your great love.
And I know that it's Your love that brings me pain.
Crush me, Lord, and let nothing of me remain -
Only Jesus, His grace, His mercy, His love!

Blessed are the mourners: You will comfort them.
Jesus, these words seem hard for me to understand
'Till I see, You do things as no one else can.
You let Your saints feel pain…then You comfort them.

What is the form of the comfort You promise?
In every step I take, I am never alone!
In the stormy times of life when I need love,
You are with me, for that is Your promise!

SIMPLE TRUTH

The other day I was talking with a friend who is at the “tail end” of a difficult time in his marriage.  As he shared some of the conflict he and his wife have experienced, I thought of the reasons for their struggles.  I saw some relational patterns they had each developed.  I reflected on the reasons for these patterns.  I knew that if they became aware of these flawed patterns, considered the source of their strategies, and applied Biblical principles to their individual lives, they would experience a much deeper relationship.  But I just listened.

My friend then told me what had helped them turn the corner.  He spoke of another couple, Gary and Lisa, who had been married for many years.  Gary told my friend that he wasn’t sure he really had anything to help my friend but he would listen.  Eventually Gary explained his relationship with Lisa.  He said, “One day we just decided that we were going to be best friends.”  This simple insight brought light to my friend and empowered him and his wife to move out of their darkness.

I guess sometimes it is just simple truth that changes us.  I love how God works.

AMAZING GRACE

Amazing grace how sweet the sound, giv’n to a wretch like me.
I once was lost, am still unfound, was blind so I can’t see.

I was meditating on God’s grace today.  God’s people long to exalt God’s grace.  This has always been the case.  Whether it is the Apostle saying, “By grace you have been saved…”, John Newton penning the words, “Amazing Grace” or Churches with names like Grace Community, we revel in God’s unmerited favor for us.  Sometimes our desire to glory in grace leads us to exalt grace by belittling its recipients.  I would suggest that instead, we should glory in the power of grace to effect change.
In Newton’s familiar hymn, he mentions being a wretch, being lost and blind.  However, it is not his wretchedness, lostness or blindness that is his focus.  Grace is glorified by God loving the previous rebel, by rescuing the lost and providing sight to the previously blind.  Grace is a powerful force that gives us a very real and present salvation.  The power of grace extends to our sanctification in that grace empowers us to live for God and His glory—which was something we could not do before “His grace appeared.”
I want to find joy in the grace of God.  That joy is not in the fact that God’s grace touched me and left me the same but in the reality that His grace set me free from sin and death (Romans 6:2. 12-14, 18; 1 Corinthians 15:55-58) and thereby gave me a relationship with the living God.

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now I am found, was blind but now I see.

Remembering Cindie Pike

This was taken from the Mission to the World Website.  I thought it beautifully honored Cindie, so I wanted to re-post it here.

Remembering Cindie Pike

“Please don’t send me to Africa” is usually the first request to God when the idea of becoming a missionary comes up. Behind that request is our desire, should God call us to missions, to retain our comfort level, proximity to family, and access to peanut butter that we currently have; a shortage of any of which would go in the “suffering for Christ” category. We make ourselves available in a very contained, controlled, and constricted way, yet hope that we can be used “powerfully”. Thanks be to God that some answer the call of God with no strings attached. They answer yes to God— access to modern amenities, constant internet, and peanut butter notwithstanding.
In 1998, soon after Ukraine opened up as a mission field, there was a meeting to decide who would move to the small city of Kherson to work with the emerging church plant there. The city’s residents are wonderful people, but the city itself was a holdover from communist days, with little in the way of appealing architecture, or natural beauty. There was running water twice a day for a few hours, the internet was constantly spotty, and the electricity would often be so weak that the lights would dim and the microwave wouldn’t work. The first hands to be raised at this meeting were that of Mel and Cindie Pike, and for the next fifteen years they lived there with weak electricity, water shortages, and on-and-off (mostly off) internet. During the years that Mel and Cindie lived in Kherson they saw the church plant grow into a church and joined with others in ministering to the many street children in the city. Cindie taught Sunday school to the children from a local orphanage regularly, and the Pikes were used by God to bring many to himself – many of whom began calling Mel and Cindie their “American Mom and Dad.”

All of this took place until Cindie’s sudden death. While out walking with Mel, she took a hard fall that broke her replacement knee and caused bleeding that she never was able to recover from. She was never able to be evacuated to Western Europe, and died in the city that God had called her to, where she lived for a decade and a half without complaint or conditions. Judging by the reactions I heard from Ukrainians since her death, I can say that she truly fulfilled her call to love and serve those around her.

In the week before Cindie’s death two significant things happened. First the heat in their apartment building went out. In the middle of winter, with cold radiators, they used space heaters to bring the temperature into the fifties in their apartment and used the oven a lot to keep the kitchen warm. The other significant event was the ordination service for the pastor of their church. A turning point for the church and one of the last steps before the Pikes’ departure.

In the days before her death when I talked to Cindie, she beamed and boasted about the pastor's ordination and said nothing about their apartment being as cold as a refrigerator. May we all answer God’s call in the way that Cindie did, and may our obedience to Christ follow her pattern of joy amidst suffering.
